Humboldt Park Residency Legacy

The Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency at Humboldt Park began as a partnership between Erie Family Health Centers and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. The idea was straightforward: train physicians who could deliver excellent care in the communities that needed it most.

What made the program work, though, was never just the institutional partnership. It was the residents, faculty, staff, and patients who built something enduring together. Their shared commitment to health equity showed up in how patients were treated and how physicians were trained. That work expanded access to high-quality primary care in Humboldt Park, and it shaped physicians who went on to lead clinics, advocate for their patients, and keep learning long after residency ended.

As one of the original Teaching Health Centers, the program trained family physicians directly in the communities that needed them most. Residents learned medicine in the context of the disparities they were trying to address. The program's reach went well beyond any one clinic, helping strengthen community-based primary care more broadly.

The program concluded in June 2026 and is no longer accepting new residents. Its graduates are still practicing, still teaching, still leading health care organizations across the country. That's really where a residency's legacy lives.
