Family Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program

Our program is sponsored by McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in partnership with the Norwegian American Hospital, Erie Family Health Center, and the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Drawing on the abundant strengths of each institution, this new program is exciting, innovative and progressive while maintaining sensitivity to the community it serves.  This partnership of community and university combines experience with educational resources which form the basis for an excellent training experience for our residents. This program was created to address the changing needs of health care in this nation as exemplified by the current national attention to primary care physicians and access to care.  We have a unique opportunity to combine the skills of a successful and sustainable community health center with the resources and support of a nationally recognized academic center.  Our goal is to create residents who, upon graduation, can take a leadership role in assessing community healthcare needs and utilize this information to affect public policy, create successful community health centers and fulfill the healthcare needs of underserved communities in cost-effective and sustainable ways.

We are proud of our affiliations with Northwestern University, Norwegian American Hospital, and Erie Family Health.  This partnership was fostered to deliver high quality health care in an underserved community while cultivating Northwestern’s high standards for research and academic medicine. Each of our teaching physicians has a faculty appointment at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

With eight residents per year, we are located on the northwest side of the city of Chicago at Norwegian American Hospital. Less than a mile away from the hospital, the Family Health Center is located at Erie Family Health in Humboldt Park. Our mission is to train family physicians with an emphasis on caring for the underserved, research, and public policy.

Residents will receive a wealth of clinical experience in a range of settings.  They will work as unopposed residents at Norwegian American Hospital, the community safety-net hospital that cares for a large multi-cultural, underserved population.  In addition, family medicine residents will work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and its Prentice Women’s Hospital, and Children’s Memorial Hospital. We also have additional training available for residents with special interests in sports medicine, maternal child health, public health, community health, and research.
