Application Process

Eight first-year resident positions are offered each academic year. We accept applications through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) beginning in September of each year. When searching for our program, enter our ACGME code 1201600706. Our program does not offer opportunities for observership rotations at this time.

Virtual Interviews for 2023-2024 Match Season: 

McGaw Northwestern Family Medicine residency programs will only offer virtual interviews during the 2023-2024 Match season due to guidance provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors and the American Academy of Family Physicians. We also want to ensure a safe and equitable experience for all candidates.  Please note we promise to provide students with a positive virtual interview experience and look forward to meeting everyone virtually! 

Application Requirements

A complete application includes the following:

  • ERAS application
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • USMLE or COMLEX Transcript
  • Medical school transcript
  • Medical school performance evaluation (dean's letter)
  • ECFMG certificate (if applicable)

We require USMLE Step 1/COMLEX 1 scores to apply and USMLE Step 2/COMLEX 2 scores in order to begin residency training.

Interview Process

Interviews are conducted October through January. Interview offers generally begin in October after the interview selection committee has had the opportunity to review applications and MSPEs. We will not make interview offers prior to the MSPE release. 

The screening process does not consider gender, sexual orientation, age, race, religion, ethnic origin, economic status, veteran status or place of residence.

International Medical Graduates

No previous U.S. clinical experience is required to apply to our program. The Northwestern McGaw Family Medicine Residency does not sponsor any visas for its residents.
